Statement of Purpose and Qualification

JOHN I. WILSON SCHOLARSHIP
FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

The scholarship has been named for John I. Wilson who worked as a classroom teacher for 21 years including ten years at Daniels Middle School from 1982-92.  Throughout the years, he has served in several leadership positions in the association including President of Wake ACT, NCAE President, NEA Executive Committee, Director of Government Relations for NCAE, Executive Director of NCAE, and presently serves as NEA Executive Director.  He was the major catalyst for salary and benefits for the teaching profession in North Carolina over the past thirty years.

 

Criteria for selection of John I. Wilson Scholarship awards:

 

1.  The student’s parent or guardian must be a Wake NCAE/NCAE/NEA member in good standing as of  December 15, 2007.

2.  The student must be a high school senior.

3.  The student must be planning to become a public school teacher.

4.   Demonstration of interest in education by membership in one of the areas below.

Future Teachers

            Teacher Cadet Program

            Work experience with children in some capacity

5.  Finalists may be interviewed to determine the winner.

 

 

THE FOLLOWING FORMS AND INFORMATION MUST BE RETURNED IN AN ENVELOPE TO THE WAKE NCAE OFFICE BY MARCH 28, 2008 AT 6 PM.

 

1.  Proof of membership by parent or guardian.

2.  Transcript with GPA, class rank, and SAT scores.

3.  One letter of recommendation from a teacher.

4.  One letter of recommendation from a person in the community.

5.   Writing portion completed by applicant.

6.  Resume including work history, honors or awards, involvement in school and community programs, and volunteer activities.
